With their semifinals series against Barangay Ginebra now reduced to a best-of-three affair, Talk 'N Text parades new import Tony Mitchell as the Norman Black-coached squad look for more firepower after losing key players due to injuries.
Aside from Kelly Williams (blood disorder) and Jared Dillinger (displaced pelvic bone), Ryan Reyes and Jimmy Alapag have also been hit by the injury bug over at the Tropang Texters’ camp.
Reyes was not able to join the Gilas-Pilipinas pool in Davao as he had to undergo treatment for his injured hamstring, while Alapag strained his calf on Saturday evening while the nationals were having a team scrimmage at the Digos del Sur Coliseum.
Mitchell, the reigning NBA Developmental League Rookie of the Year, is a very potent scorer. He averaged 21.9 points while playing for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the D-League.
According to an article in the NBA D-League website: "Mitchell was the only player in the NBA D-League to record two 40-plus point games during the regular season when he scored 47 against the Austin Toros on March 22 and 49 against the Sioux Falls Skyforce on April 5."
He also led the Mad Ants to their first post-season appearance, where he normed 30.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals before bowing to the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Mitchell is coming in as a replacement to Jerome Jordan.
Chris Alpert – vice president of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League – described Mitchell as “a talented player and he had a standout first season in Fort Wayne.”
“His impressive ability to score, as well as his selection to the 2013 NBA D-League All-Star Game, solidified his position as a top young prospect in our league. I congratulate him on a terrific start to his professional career and look forward to watching him to continue to develop into an NBA-caliber player,” Alpert added.
Mitchell will make his PBA debut tonight for the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters as they seek to get the upperhand in their playoffs battle against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in Game Three of the semis.
