Shellfish poisoning deaths reported in Tacloban

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reports the death of two individuals and the hospitalization of 16 others in Tacloban City due to shellfish poisoning associated with a suspected toxic red tide event.

BFAR Provincial Director Rolando Ay-ay says similar incidents have also affected residents of Tarangnan, Western Samar.

BFAR has taken samples of the water and mussels in the area for laboratory analysis.

Meanwhile, BFAR advises residents of both towns to refrain from eating and harvesting shellfish until the agency sounds the all-clear from the possible risk of toxic red tide algae bloom.
