Phivolcs: Quake not from East Bohol Fault

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology clarified on Tuesday that, after recent data analysis, the Magnitude 7.2 Central Visayas earthquake last week originated from a fault somewhere northwest of Bohol and not from the East Bohol fault.

Phivolcs Geologist Lawrence Arteza says the fault where the Bohol quake originated had a history of triggering quakes of around Magnitude 5 in 1996 and 2004.

Arteza said that both quakes did not result in any ground ruptures and had no aftershocks recorded, making it hard to determine how long the fault is.

Phivolcs had initially said last week's quake originated from the East Bohol fault, and that the epicenter was in Carmen, Bohol, but with more data streaming in from aftershocks, it later revised its findings, now saying that the epicenter was at Sagbayan town.
